Mamey Sapote Seed – Dona Maria
The Mamey Sapote is native to the coastal parts of Guatemala. The fruit is incredibly sweet and is used in many desserts. But we are more interested in the seed! The Maya from the Chichicastenango area used to trade apples, pears and peaches for Sapotes from the Coast. They developed a traditional drink made with a paste made of dried, roasted seeds and corn which was only prepared by a chosen few and shared during ceremonies and rituals. They also used the paste to coat the hair and use as a delicious naturally almond scented shampoo.
We work with the family of Miguel, who are currently the only ones still working with the Sapote. Through them, we can also have a direct impact on their community and help preserve this special cultural tradition as many members work with them and benefit in terms of knowledge, expertise and finances. At Tierra & Lava, we take the traditional (ethnobotanical) method and combine it with other goodies to in our Zero Waste Hair Care range.
Sapote strengthens the hair root, works as an emollient. It is rich in Vitamin A and even helps detangle and add slip to hair. The seed oil is commonly used in the beauty industry and is called “Sapuyul Oil”.
