Copal (Uaxactun, Peten, Guatemala)

Copal

Copal has been used traditionally by the Maya in Guatemala for burning during sacred ceremonies and is believed to purify the air and spirit.

It is a resin similar to amber with a smoky, sweet aroma.

It is used medicinally locally in Guatemala in poultices for back pain and to kill fungal outbreaks. It is an astringent (therefore great in face toners), antibacterial and stimulates blood circulation.

The organic Copal we use for Tierra & Lava products is harvested from trees in the Uaxactun village and Mayan site of Guatemala (just behind Tikal).
