The Summer Solstice: A Time for Reflection and Rest

As the days become longer and warmer, the summer solstice is approaching which is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the day when the Earth's axial tilt is most inclined towards the sun, resulting in the maximum amount of daylight. In the Northern Hemisphere, this year it falls on June 21st.

SIGNIFICANCE IN MAYA CULTURE

In many cultures, the summer solstice symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, the power of the sun over the forces of darkness and evil. It is a time to honor the life-giving properties of the sun and to express gratitude for the abundance it provides.

The summer solstice has been a sacred moment for the ancient Maya culture. They believed that the solstice indicated the birth of a new sun and the coming of winter. They even built their buildings thinking about the solstice, using their learnings of astronomy to align them with the movements of the celestial bodies.

For example, the pyramid of Uaxactun in Guatemala was a gathering place for Mayan groups to worship and learn. The observatory in Uaxactun is believed to be one of the first astrological structures in the Mayan world. This is a special place for Tierra and Lava as we source our copal here.

A TIME FOR REFLECTION

The summer solstice also reminds us of the cyclical nature of life and the importance of balance. Just as the Earth has seasons of growth and rest, so do we. By embracing the energy of the summer solstice and taking time to honor the sun and its power, we can tap into the natural rhythm of the universe and find greater harmony within ourselves.

It can also be a good reminder for all of us to reflect on the first half of the year and set intentions for the rest of the year.

Grab a pen and paper and reflect on these questions:

  • What have you achieved so far?

  • What do you want to accomplish in the coming months?

  • What do you want to have done by the end of 2023?

Keep these reflections and look back every once in a while and update them when needed.

Overall, the summer solstice represents a turning point in the Earth's annual cycle, symbolizing light, abundance, and the celebration of life. It is a time for appreciating nature's bounty, honoring the sun's power, and embracing personal transformation. How will you choose to embrace yours?
